Human brains show larger-than-life activity at moment of death  (The Hill) – The brains of dying people may spark to sudden life in their final moments. Two apparently brain-dead people taken off of life-support showed sudden spikes in neural activity, according to a study published on Monday. The findings published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences provide scientific support for accounts of “near-death experiences” — powerful and often mystical experiences that happen when a patient is about to die.But they also shed new light into the surprisingly murky question of just how we die, said Jimo Borjigin of the University of Michigan. Facebook agrees to pay $725M settlement: What’s the deadline to file a claim? In a small study of four patients taken off life support, Borjigin’s team found something surprising: the brains of two out of the four burst to life in the moments before death. In particular, the patients displayed a sudden surge in the specific type of brain waves that usually indicate conscious thought.Production of thos...

James Stavridis: Ukraine is running short of ammo. So is the U.S. As the war in Ukraine rages and with Kyiv’s forces likely to begin a major offensive any day now, both sides in the conflict are facing shortages of ammunition, electronic components, precision-guided weapons and even cement. While the West has a vastly larger overall capability to deliver the necessities of combat, snarls in the global commercial supply chain are beginning to manifest. The real “spring offensive” may not be tanks and armor, but upscaled weapons production in the factories of Ukraine’s democratic supporters. What should they be doing collectively to make sure the Ukrainians get what they need to turn back Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion? And what will be the impact on broader global supply chains? As the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s military commander over a decade ago, I would often look deep into logistics and supply chains as I contemplated our combat operations in Afghanistan, the Balkans, Libya and counter-piracy....

Strong winds cause problems for allergy sufferers ST. LOUIS – Gusty winds are causing allergy sufferers to struggle with all the pollen blowing around in the air.Our current allergens are the tree pollens being spread by Monday’s relentless winds.“With these kinds of winds, we’re going to have really high volume of pollen in the air,” said Dr. Barbara Jost, an allergist with Associated Specialists in Medicine. “And then for us to breathe in. Those pollens will stick to the cornea. It’s a set-up for lots of really severe allergy symptoms right now.”Jost says even those who don’t suffer from allergies can have a reaction on windy days. The wind creates a drying affect and carries additional irritants in the air.“Dust particles, dirt, grit. Those things really just pour salt into the wound of allergies,” she said. Dust storm closes I-55 in southern Illinois and causes massive pile-up Keep your windows closed and to limit time outside if you can. Rockies’ April was a shower of mostly bad baseball

Rockies’ April was a shower of mostly bad baseball One month doesn’t make a season, and for that, the Rockies should be thankful. After winning the first two games of the season at San Diego to close out March, the Rockies finished April with a 9-20 record. It marked the first time in franchise history that they lost 20 games in April, and it was just the seventh time in 30-plus seasons they’ve lost 20 games in a calendar month. The Rockies’ .310 winning percentage is the worst in the National League and has them on pace to finish 50-112. While it’s highly unlikely Colorado will stumble that badly, a 100-loss season for the first time looms as a real possibility. The Rockies, naturally, say they’re ready to shrug off April’s shower of defeats that leaves them with a minus-54 run differential.“Seems like we haven’t hit our stride in any aspect this year,” first baseman C.J. Cron said Sunday after smacking a three-run homer in the Rockies’ 12-4 victory over Arizona. “Obvio...
