French cocktail lounge with small bites replaces Au Feu Brasserie in Wash Park

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 09:57:09 GMT

When Jared Leonard closed Wash Park’s Au Feu Brasserie in January, he set out to create a concept better suited for the neighborhood.“Au Feu was meant to be fine-dining with a European wine list that won an Award of Excellence in ‘Wine Spectator,’” Leonard said. “It was very sophisticated, and we did a lot of things right there, but it’s not what that Wash Park neighborhood wants. The format didn’t really fit.”Clairette’s handcrafted cocktails feature fresh-squeezed juices, plus homemade simple syrups and sodas. (Provided by Clairette)On June 15, Clairette, a new French cocktail bar with Mediterranean small bites, opened in place of Au Feu Brasserie at 81 S. Pennsylvania St. Leonard, who also owns AJ’s Pit Bar-B-Q in Denver, Campfire in Evergreen and Lakewood and the now-closed Grabowski’s, originally opened Au Feu in 2021 after a brief stint in RiNo’s Zeppelin Station food hall. Opinion: Dobbs, in just one year, has inflicted devastating harm on Colorado women and doctors

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 09:57:09 GMT

It has been a year since the Supreme Court overturned the Constitutional right to abortion established in Roe v. Wade with the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision on June 24, 2022, and the impact on Colorado has been devastating. It has caused trauma to providers, patients, and advocates alike.Even in states like Colorado where abortion is legal, the Dobbs decision has thrown the health care system into chaos. Patients, many of them in medical, emotional, and financial distress, are flooding Colorado from abortion ban states. Statewide, patients here are seeing delays in the full spectrum of reproductive health care because of the time-sensitive nature of abortion care. Routine screenings and procedures are getting pushed back and moved around because we have a crisis created by the Supreme Court and anti-abortion ideologues.DENVER, COLORADO – JUNE 27: Heather Brown, 43, is dressed as a handmaid from The Handmaid’s Tale in front of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver dur...

Meatballs in tomato sauce get a little lighter

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 09:57:09 GMT

By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesMeatballs in tomato sauce are a comforting thing, a ruddy, garlicky Italian American classic meant to be nestled on a pile of spaghetti and showered in cheese. This dish is not that.True, it has meatballs, assertively flavored with garlic and browned in hot oil. And yes, they finish cooking in a savory, brick-red tomato sauce. But that’s where the similarities end. Because these are summer meatballs. The traditional dish, to my mind, is an ideal winter companion. A cozy mix of canned tomatoes and olive oil bubbling leisurely on the stove, it’s perfect to sit close by when it’s chilly out, as warming as a woolly turtleneck.Think of this version as meatballs all decked out in their resort wear. Made from fresh summer tomatoes that are only briefly cooked, the sauce stays juicy and bright — and making it won’t heat up your kitchen. What the dish loses in long-cooked marinara richness, it more than makes up for in sweetness, tang and a fragrant to...

And as the Santa Monica History Museum’s remarkable new exhibition Coming Out West: LGBTQ+ Elders Share Their Stories movingly demonstrates through its partnership with The Outwords Archive, the best way to record those histories is in the first-person stories of the people who lived them.Coming Out West, Santa Monica History MuseumWithin the small but mighty institution’s galleries, Coming Out West occupies a central hall flanked by galleries dedicated to permanent displays on the city’s establishment, early industries, iconic amusements, and famous residents (like Ambassador Shirley Temple Black) — and as of Juneteenth joined by a new permanent gallery in conjunction with the Quinn Research Center presenting exhibitions that will center stories of Black San...
