RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s State Board of Elections voted unanimously to certify the 2023 legislative elections and other electoral contests during a meeting Monday in Richmond. After brief remarks from Department of Elections staff and without any debate, the board took its vote, effectively signing off on the results. Democrats held their Senate majority in November and flipped control of the House of Delegates. The leaders of the two major state parties were on hand for the meeting. In remarks afterward to reporters, they said they wanted to convey their confidence in Virginia’s elections system at a time when polling shows many Americans remain critical about the state of U.S. democracy.“I’m satisfied with the way the election was administered, and the ultimate tabulations that were done, and the final determinations and the certification today,” said Rich Anderson, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia. The first Prince George’s County, Maryland, police officer ever charged with murder while in the line of duty took the stand Monday in his own defense.After nearly four years, this was the first time that Cpl. Michael Owen had ever put his version of what happened on the record. DENVER (KDVR) -- A 26-year-old man was killed Sunday night after colliding with two vehicles at the intersection of East Iliff Avenue and South Havana Street, according to the Aurora Police Department.According to police, officers responded to the intersection at about 10 p.m. for a crash. A white sportbike was found to have been traveling northbound on Havana Street and ran a red light, striking the side of a white Dodge Caravan that was turning left on a green arrow. The rider was then struck by a black Chevrolet sedan, also making a left turn to travel east on Iliff Avenue.The drivers of both vehicles that struck the motorcycle remained at the scene, according to investigators, and cooperated with law enforcement. Tamarac Fire Rescue responded to the scene of an accident where a vehicle crashed through a business wall.Authorities rushed to the scene, located along the 7000 block of N. University Drive, around 3:15 p.m., Monday.The crash impacted a storage room for the business, potentially causing chemical leaks, prompting concerns of a hazmat situation. An employee was at the stock room before the vehicle crashed into the business. Employees at Milano’s Bakery told 7News that they didn’t hear anything but smelled chemicals in the back room that were knocked over. They also said that soccer superstar, Lionel Messi, visited the bakery on Sunday. 7Skyforce hovered over the scene where the blue pickup truck crashed into the the building. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A female tourist from Boston was killed Monday by a shark while paddleboarding in the Bahamas, police told reporters.The victim, who was not identified, was attacked less than a mile off the western end of New Providence island, where the capital, Nassau, is located. She was paddleboarding with a man who was not injured, according to Police Sgt. Army Lt. Gen. Jon Braga made quite the entrance Monday, arriving via military helicopter as he visited his former high school in Attleboro ahead of this weekend’s Army-Navy game at Gillette Stadium. Braga serves as the commanding general of the U.S. Army Special Operations. He graduated from Bishop Feehan High School in 1987 and spoke to 7NEWS while visiting his alma mater. “It’s a great feeling to come back here,” Braga said. “I’m just fortunate to have gone here and it helped shape who I was as a person.” “That carried on and I think about it often,” he continued.
