2-TV setup or sports bar? Local Heat, Panthers fans find viewing options for playoff games

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:12:01 GMT

Playoff fever is at a fever pitch as both the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers are one win away from moving on in their respective series.Wednesday night’s games are must-see TV for any South Florida sports fan. The problem for sports fans is that both games will be airing at the same time. One option could be to move stuff around, like having a two-TV setup, but that could be a lot of work. If moving a bunch of furniture around seems like too much work, fans can always find a sports bar where they will air both games, like Waxy’s Pub in Fort Lauderdale.“Look as the Panthers and Heat keep churning out these wins,” said Barry Nessom with Waxy’s. Waxy’s is just busier and busier on Wednesday as the games’ start times grow nearer. “Even last week, when the Panthers were playing, it was electrifying when they beat the Bruins,” Nessom said.“I’m really excited for two South Florida teams to be doing really well in the playoffs,” sports ...

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday signed into law a sweeping immigration bill that bolsters his migrant relocation program and limits social services for immigrants lacking permanent legal status — key political priorities of the Republican as he prepares to launch a presidential campaign. The signing came a day before the expiration of coronavirus restrictions on asylum that have allowed the U.S. to quickly expel migrants at the southern border for the last three years, a policy known as Title 42.DeSantis, who is expected to announce his presidential candidacy in the coming weeks, has made hardening Florida’s immigration laws a top priority as he heaves criticism on federal border policy and takes a hard-right stance geared toward Republican primary voters.“We’re bracing for some turbulent times ahead,” DeSantis said at a bill signing ceremony in Jacksonville, adding, “You’re likely to see it get a lot worse.”The law provid...

Immanuel Quickley was out again.New York’s sixth man missed Wednesday’s game because of his sprained ankle, leaving Tom Thibodeau with a shorthanded bench to tackle an elimination Game 5.“Day to day,” Thibodeau said about Quickley. “He’s getting better.”Quickley suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss in Miami, where Bam Adebayo dove for a loose ball and undercut the legs of the Knicks guard. Before the injury, Quickley was struggling in the playoffs while averaging just nine points and shooting 24% from beyond the arc. The 23-year-old is eligible for a contract extension in the offseason, and his value, if anything, has declined after peaking in March because of a breakthrough regular season. In 13 career playoff games, Quickley shot just 33.3% overall and 27% from beyond the arc.Without Quickley in Game 4, Thibodeau extended starter Jalen Brunson’s minutes and inserted Miles McBride into the rotation for...

Lawmakers were already on their way out by the time the protestors tried to unfurl a banner in the chamber.Protestors gathered on the fourth floor public viewing gallery for the House chamber, saying they would not budge unless legislative leadership introduced bills placing a moratorium on new fossil fuel infrastructure projects currently being constructed or proposed.“The commonwealth has the ability to be a national leader during the rapid transition away from fossil fuels to green renewable energy,” the group said in a statement. “We should stop investing rate-payer money in fossil fuel infra...

After Arlington National Cemetery horse deaths, Army makes changes to improve their care

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:12:01 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army announced changes Wednesday to the way it will care for the gray and black horses that carry service members’ flag-draped caskets to their final resting places in Arlington National Cemetery after the deaths of horses in the ceremonial unit exposed their poor living conditions. The horses are part of the caisson platoon of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as the Old Guard, which is best known for guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the cemetery, located just across the river from Washington. Two Old Guard platoon horses, Mickey and Tony, had to be euthanized within days of each other in February 2022. Both died from colon impaction, a “dry, firm mass of feed, or foreign material, such as dirt or sand,” and in Tony’s case, he had to be euthanized because the sand and gravel impaction was so extensive it could not be surgically removed, according to an Army investigation. After the deaths of the two horses, both in their 20s, veterinarians...

A Senate committee on Wednesday approved a rail-safety bill introduced after the derailment of a freight train in East Palestine, Ohio, but its fate remains uncertain due to significant Republican opposition. The bill would increase inspections of trains carrying hazardous materials, require the use of technology to detect track defects, and sharply raise penalties on railroad companies for crashes. The Senate Commerce Committee advanced the bill one day after Norfolk Southern renewed a promise to create a fund for residents near the site of the Ohio train wreck to cover any decline in home values since the February derailment.Norfolk Southern Corp. A skin patch to treat peanut allergies? Study in toddlers shows promise

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:12:01 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — An experimental skin patch is showing promise to treat toddlers who are highly allergic to peanuts — training their bodies to handle an accidental bite.Peanut allergy is one of the most common and dangerous food allergies. Parents of allergic tots are constantly on guard against exposures that can turn birthday parties and play dates into emergency room visits. There is no cure. The only treatment is for children 4 and older who can consume a special peanut powder to protect against a severe reaction. The patch, named Viaskin, aims to deliver that kind of treatment through the skin instead. In a major test with youngsters ages 1 to 3, it helped those who couldn’t tolerate even a small fraction of a peanut to eventually safely eat a few, researchers reported Wednesday. If additional testing pans out, “this would fill a huge unmet need,” said Dr. Matthew Greenhawt, an allergist at Children’s Hospital Colorado who helped lead the study.About 2% of U.S. children are alle...
