'We have fallen so short': Audit committee slams poor conditions at Austin Animal Center

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A city-led audit and independent report conducted on the Austin Animal Center were presented Wednesday and revealed failures in the shelter's open intake operations and poor conditions for animals staying at AAC, despite the shelter meeting its "no kill" policy threshold.The City of Austin produced its own audit of AAC, as well as hired Tim Crum with the National Center for Animal Shelter Evaluations to produce his own independent report. These analyses focused on three critical questions surrounding operations at AAC:Why are there space issues at the shelter?Are the animals being treated properly?Is the City of Austin's live release status sustainable?Keith Salas, assistant city auditor with the City of Austin, presented findings to the city's Finance and Audit Committee Wednesday. According to a release, DPD officers responded to the 1400 block of Elm Street, which is in the downtown area, around 1:15 p.m. Monday and found Jenean Chapman, 46, dead in an apartment. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday determined Chapman’s death was a homicide. James Patrick, 48, was identified as a suspect in Chapman's death. Patrick was taken into custody in Austin by UT police on Wednesday, according to DPD. Dallas police said Patrick will be charged with murder and is in custody in Travis County.According to Travis County jail records, Patrick is being held on a $100,000 bond and has an "out of county felony" charge.Albany jeweler opening third location in Queensbury

(WFLA) — The National Hurricane Center is continuing to watch Tropical Storm Philippe and a disturbance, which is expected to become the next named storm.The NHC said it is watching an area of showers and thunderstorms that continue to show signs of organization.The system is located about halfway between the Cabo Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles. Hurricane Ian victim told roof can be repaired, but roofers say it must be replaced It could become a tropical depression or a tropical storm in the next day or so while it moves west-northwest across the central tropical Atlantic. The system has a 90 percent chance of development over the next two days. On Monday morning, a 2,035-pound dinosaur departed Craig on a flatbed trailer migrating south.The aluminum sculpture by local artist Rick Kawchack has found a new home with Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! at its museum in Grand Prairie, Texas.Kawchack completed the massive piece in 2013 after two years and 2,000 hours of work. The life-size likeness was his first venture into creating large-scale art.
