ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — The family of a Long Island, New York, man who died after being beaten by police with flashlights and fists during a 2008 traffic stop was awarded $35 million in damages by a federal jury on Thursday.Frederick K. Brewington, attorney for the family of Kenny Lazo, said “justice has been served,” Newsday reported. Lazo’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County and five police officers in 2009.“It was absolutely appalling how the Suffolk County police physically abused and humiliated Mr. Lazo, then tried to cover it up,” Brewington said, “No family should have to go through what Mr. Lazo’s family had to.”Jurors awarded Lazo’s family $13.5 million in compensatory damages and $21.5 million in punitive damages.Lazo was 24 when he was pulled over by police on a ramp to the Southern State Parkway in Bay Shore. Marc Lindemann, an attorney representing the police, said Lazo, who was suspected...

Theater Review: A play about the making of the movie ‘Jaws’ makes a nice splash on Broadway

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:35:59 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — A rickety boat. Three guys with egos. And a massive, deadly shark. What could go wrong? Not what you might be expecting with “The Shark Is Broken,” the lyrical play that opened Thursday about the trio of actors who enlivened the pioneering Steven Spielberg -directed movie “Jaws.”Set on a boat off Martha’s Vineyard during filming in 1974, “The Shark Is Broken” is a moving comedy-drama, mirroring the way the movie segued from horror to playfulness so effortlessly. It stars Colin Donnell as Roy Scheider, the police chief Brody; Alex Brightman as Richard Dreyfuss, the oceanographer Hooper; and Ian Shaw as Robert Shaw, the shark hunter Quint. The play instantly earns legitimacy because Ian Shaw is Robert’s lookalike son and a co-writer. It’s about the backstage frustration of making the first summer blockbuster, of course — one audience member in line at a preview wearing a “Jaws” T-shirt will be pleased — but captures much more in its net.The long idle ho...

CHICAGO — One in 6 to 7 women suffer with the condition often undiagnosed and under treated. Now doctors and mothers weigh in on a first-of-its-kind medication born to quickly decrease the debilitating symptoms of postpartum depression. “New motherhood is dark for sure,” mother of two Rose Boyle said. “You are sleep deprived and you’re like ‘Oh do I know what I’m doing?’”“You’re dealing with no sleep, your hormones are all over the place,” Caitlin O’Shea said. “You’re trying to figure out what is typical and what is atypical.”NorthShore Swedish Hospital OB-GYN Dr Stacy Brown says the symptoms of postpartum depression can be subtle.“’Baby Blues,’ that postpartum blues, is typical,” she said. “It’s a huge change in your life and having some emotional reaction to that is normal and expected. But more than anything, it puts a woman’s health at risk — for their joy, their well-being and ultimately an increased risk of suicidal ideation and death.”Mother of three Andrea Hartman wants...

Saints’ Yunior Severino swings for homers, and he hits a lot of them

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:35:59 GMT

Most power hitters will say that they step to the plate with the goal of making solid contact. If they’re successful enough, they reason, the home runs will come.New Saints slugger Yunior Severino is not among them. The switch-hitting, 23-year-old native of the Dominican Republic approaches each at-bat with the same goal — hit the ball out — and he’s been particularly good at it this season.Severino had a franchise-record 24 home runs with Double-A Wichita before getting called up to the Saints a week ago, and added No. 25 on Tuesday in his first home game with the Saints.“He’s got a lot of thump,” Saints manager Toby Gardenhire said of the 6-foot, 189-pound Severino. “That ball flies off his bat. He’s got a lot of bat speed from both sides of the plate.”Twenty of Severino’s 25 home runs have come from the left side of the plate, but he came into Thursday’s game averaging a home run every 16 at-bats as a right-hander, and every 15.6 at-bats as a left-hander.“He’s had a really g...

‘Gross’ performance by Lynx leads to loss against last-place team

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:35:59 GMT

The Lynx have plenty of time to think about Thursday’s disappointing performance. There’s plenty they’d probably prefer to forget.Playing poor defense, letting their opponent control the boards leading to easy baskets, and their superstar again battling foul trouble were just parts of what added up to a 91-73 loss at last-place Indiana.“As a whole, we just didn’t have that connectedness and, like, deep want to go out there and win the game. I don’t even think we had that many moments. It just was an overall gross game,” said Rachel Banham. “You want it or you don’t want it. Collectively we did not want it enough and they very much did and it showed.”Minnesota (14-16) has lost three of four after winning four of five, and the next game is Aug.18 in Seattle. Ten games remain in the regular season.“This is not the way you want to go into a few days off. Nobody feels good about it,” said Jessica Shepard.Coach Cheryl Reeve said getting back on track begins simply by playing harder.“We’re ...

Follow live updates about wildfires racing across part of Maui in Hawaii, destroying a historic town and forcing evacuations. The National Weather Service says Hurricane Dora, which is passing south of the island chain at a safe distance, was partly to blame for strong winds that initially drove the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters.Palmdale, California, resident Kimberly Buen said she can’t reach her father, Maurice “Shadow” Buen, a 79-year-old retired sport fisherman who can’t see or walk well. Her dad has two friends who drive him to the pharmacy and help read his mail, she said, but neither can get back to Lahaina, the historic town where her father lives that is now reduced to charred vehicles and ash.“He has no way out,” Buen said. “I’ve been checking all the lists, all the social media and following all the people at the shelters. I already called the Red Cross. And I just don’t know what else to do.”She’s not the only one frantically searching ...
