Joel Embiid ruled out for Celtics-76ers Game 1, has done ‘zero running’ yet in recovery from knee injury

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:10:39 GMT

As Doc Rivers walked up to take a seat at the podium before Monday’s Game 1, the 76ers coach paused for a moment before taking a deep breath while looking out at the assembled reporters, who were waiting for an update on his star big man.“Well, I don’t have a speech or anything,” Rivers cracked before taking a seat.Rivers confirmed Joel Embiid – the 76ers star and frontrunner to win MVP on Tuesday – was out for Game 1, but didn’t know, or share, much about when he could return. Embiid suffered a right knee injury in Philadelphia’s Game 3 victory of its first-round sweep, and was reportedly diagnosed with a sprained LCL on April 21. He also reportedly received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in the knee last week.Embiid participated in 76ers shootaround at TD Garden on Monday, but seems far off from a return. Rivers said he the big man has done “zero running,” and was unsure when asked if there is optimism that he could be back for Wednesday night’s Game 2.“I don’t know,” Rive...

Yankees Notebook: Aaron Judge hits the IL as other injury updates pour in

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:10:39 GMT

The Yankees let a few days pass before making a decision, but the team placed Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list prior to Monday’s game against the Guardians.Judge suffered a right hip strain when he tried stealing third in a game against the Twins on April 26. His right hand was the initial concern, but the outfielder remained in the game and started against the Rangers the following day. Judge exited that game due to his hip after two at-bats, though.Judge’s IL stint is retroactive to April 28. Franchy Cordero took his spot on the active roster. The Yankees had yet to make a determination on Judge by the time Aaron Boone spoke to reporters Monday. With a weekend series coming up against the first-place Rays in Tampa, the Yankees would have obviously liked to have the reigning MVP active. But the club ultimately decided it was best to sideline Judge.“We don’t want to put him in a position to where he goes out and compromises somewhere else and the injury ...

Few leads, false alarms as search for Texas gunman drags on

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:10:39 GMT

By JUAN A. LOZANO and PAUL J. WEBER (Associated Press)CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) — Authorities on Monday still had not captured a gunman in Texas who killed five neighbors from Honduras, and as the search dragged through a third day with false alarms and few apparent leads, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott faced backlash over drawing attention to the victims’ immigration status. An FBI agent on the scene near Houston acknowledged they have little to go on in the widening manhunt for 38-year-old Francisco Oropeza, who has been deported four times since 2009, but who neighbors say lived on their street for years prior to Friday night’s shooting in the rural town of Cleveland. Twice on Monday, a sheriff’s office in a neighboring county alerted the public about possible sightings, but neither turned up Oropeza.Abbott offered a $50,000 reward over the weekend for any tips that might lead to the gunman, and while doing so, the three-term governor described all the victims as...

Jalen Brunson joins Julius Randle and Jimmy Butler on Game 2 injury report

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:10:39 GMT

It’s a series that can turn on an ankle.Jalen Brunson was added to the injury list with a “sore ankle,” joining the sprained-ankle duo of Julius Randle and Jimmy Butler as officially “questionable” for Tuesday’s Game 2.Technically, “questionable” means 50-50. But teams often use the status as the cagey strategic option to throw off the opposition, even if they know more about whether the player will suit up.Brunson’s injury was a new wrinkle and perhaps helps explain why he was so ineffective in Sunday’s Game 1 loss with five turnovers. Despite a request, the Knicks didn’t make Brunson available to the media Monday.Randle, meanwhile, is undoubtedly ahead of Butler since his ankle turned nearly a week ago (April 26) and he was spotted warming up Sunday with intensity. The 28-year-old sat Game 1 and the Knicks felt his absence while getting hammered in the second half by the Heat in a 108-101 defeat. The Knicks didn̵...

Yellen ups debt crash pressure: Tells Congress US could default as soon as June 1

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:10:39 GMT

WASHINGTON  — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen notified Congress that the U.S. could default on its debt as early as June 1, if the body does not raise or suspend its statutory borrowing authority before then.In a letter to House and Senate leaders, Yellen urged congressional leaders “to protect the full faith and credit of the United States by acting as soon as possible” to address the $31.4 trillion limit on its legal borrowing authority, adding that it is impossible to predict with certainty the exact date of when the U.S. will run out of cash.“We have learned from past debt limit impasses that waiting until the last minute to suspend or increase the debt limit can cause serious harm to business and consumer confidence, raise short-term borrowing costs for taxpayers, and negatively impact the credit rating of the United States,” she said in the letter Monday. Also Monday, the Congressional Budget Office reported that it saw a greater risk of the U.S. running...

Search for top Southern Baptist leader fails amid dispute

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:10:39 GMT

A powerful Southern Baptist committee was looking to appoint a new leader Monday who could navigate controversies over its handling of sexual-abuse reforms and the ousting of churches with women serving as pastors.Instead, the Executive Committee found itself tangled in yet another dispute, voting down a recommendation to make its own former chairman its president in what had become a racially fraught decision. That 50-31 vote came after some of the denomination’s prominent Black clergy questioned the selection process, which they saw as bypassing an African American pastor who has led the committee as interim president for more than a year. The selection process hit a nerve in a denomination that has lost some Black clergy in recent years over what they have seen as a failure of the mostly white-led denomination to make good on its pledges to reform after its history of supporting slavery and segregation. While the SBC elected its first Black president in 2012, no African Amer...
